I sometimes thought about swimming pools that I had used in the world, and considered what happened to them in the winter. The summer months benefit from all of the preparation, and then down come the winter months. There are those who will swim bravely throughout the year whatever the temperature. You continue with your established summer routine, which is probably the best thing to do.
A friend of mine got married and moved to a property in Alicante in Spain. The garden looked like a penitentiary, and there was no sign of a swimming pool. He didn’t care a jot, and with British determination, set to work with the plans for a pool in his rocky garden. When you have a swimming pool many things swirl through your mind like what swimming pool parts that are required to keep it in good shape.
I noticed in some of my first visits out to the place, how difficult is was to get the right people for the job, who had patience. Obviously there was a bit of a language problem, but not enough to do any real damage. He was able to get the use of local workers with knowledge of the area, whose ruggedness would defeat most garden tools. The pool engineering was one of the stiffest challenges that he was presented with. Try as he may, he couldn’t find the swimming pool boiler engineers that he needed at an affordable price. He elected to have a go on his own. He thought is should be like doing some DIY on your car – find a Haynes manual and away you go. Sadly Haynes haven’t produced one for swimming pools yet, so it was a bit tougher to achieve. Oddly enough the simplest of all the tasks was installing the swimming pool solar heating , which was well worth the effort and will save a great deal of money in the long run.

You have no choice, as a pool owner, to use chemicals. There are several things to consider when thinking of which chemicals.
One of the most important rules to observe is: never mix your swimming pool chemicals. it is vitally important not to mix dry chemicals with water. The best advice, finally, is do not pick up the chemicals and handle them in any way. Make sure you don’t handle them with your bare hands!
As a pool owner, you will have to use three chemicals in your swimming pool. They will be used often, so are of great importance.
1. Chlorine tablets, which are available in both one and three inch sizes. You are supposed to put the chlorine tablets in the skimmer. Usually you would put about three or four tablets at any one time. It is a good thing to change the tablets once a week during the summer months, when usage is at its highest.
2. Powdered alkaline. The germs will be killed by the chlorine, but the level of acidity in the water will rise. You will need to use alkaline, otherwise the metal parts within the pool will start to rust. The clarity of the water will disappear leaving a misty green colour. Once the rust starts to appear on the metalic objects, you will need to drain off the pool and replace them. This can be time consuming, or expensive if you have to call in the services of swimming pool engineers. Perhaps the most expensive part you could damage in this way are pool filters. You have to guard against too much alkaline powder. Many germs will start to breed, and the water will loose its clarity. You are advised to use ‘brand’ name powders and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines
3. Chlorine powder is important for tackling algae and bacteria. It is vital to use lots of this powder, to combat the rapid spead of the organisms.
Chlorine powder will cost you a lot of money. Don’t go out and buy it, before you have checked how much you will actually need. You can’t get away from using this chemical, it is not possible to fight the germs without it!
